Ok you guys, I need some help!

A few months ago I read this book that I loved, and I have no idea what it's called. I've asked my library people, I've googled, I've browsed the shelves in where I thought I found it once, and still - nothing!

So this book is by a Canadian author and it wasn't written too long ago. I would say probably at the very earliest the year 2000. I think the author was a guy, but I can't be too sure of that!

My mystery book takes place in Ontario and is about a family that is dysfunctional. The dad works for a screen manufacturing company that is going to go bankrupt if they don't come up with something new and exciting in the screen industry. The mom collects antiques and has turned that into a little business - she dresses show homes for open houses with her vast collection. The story revolves around the son, who is a young guy, university student, who decides to go to Afghanistan on a civil servant type mission. He works with the water system at a Canadian military base in Afghanistan.

The storey is really about the family when the son comes home early from his mission. Something tragic happened to the son (I won't give it away here!) while away, and the book is basically about the parents trying to reach their son and find out what happened and why he came home early.

If you know what books this is, PLEASE tell me! It's been driving me crazy for months!
